3 Mistakes Killing Your Job Search
A theme I see from many of my clients, and it doesn’t matter if they are entry level or 20 years or so into their very accomplished career, are the following three problems when approaching a job search.
Not only can this be applied to or seen in a job search, but also navigating where to evolve to in your current company.
You don't really know what you want, and if you don't know what you want, how can you tell a potential employer/networking connection about what you do, what skills you have, why you'd be a great fit for a role.
Your resume (LinkedIn) is too vague. You talk a lot about what you did, but not why it's important
Simple example:
- Managed websites
vs
- Drove traffic to websites consistently and increased conversions month over month by transforming the SEO contentYou are too humble about what you have achieved and accomplished because you're afraid people are going to think you are showboating.
You and your assets are YOUR marketing and sales. If you don't tell people what you are capable of, who will?
Doing the work to get clarity around all of this is the hard work that leads to more fulfilling work and roles. Check out this blog post. This client did this work. She’s really happy.
Additionally, once you really know what you want to do, and it’s aligned with who you are as a human, it honors the way you want to work, who you work with, and you have aligned the achievements and skills you already possess, you get more competitive for the roles you want.
Why?
Because you aren’t throwing spaghetti at the wall hoping anything will stick. You are clearly hand delivering your value to those who need to know it, making a clear understanding as to why you should be the one for the role.
If you’re throwing vague resumes out there, and competing with people who have the clarity of where they want to be, you’re generally not going to shine as brightly amongst them.
Finally, working with a coach can help people get clearer so much faster. The more I coach, the more I believe this. After working with so many brilliant people, having a container to talk this out with someone gets people from overthinking to action, aligned with what they really want to do, more quickly than all the time spent spinning about what’s next. It can save you so much time, energy, and effort. And likely increase your earning potential!
