Why “Tell Me About Yourself” is a Critical Piece of Interview Success

Preparing to answer the question, "Tell me about yourself" is one of the most critical pieces of interviewing success. There is so much opportunity here to grab the attention of the interviewer(s) by being kind and setting the tone of the interview that immediately shows that the candidate is not only highly qualified for the position but also understands the needs of the role.

This is not a time to ambiguous, talk about your love of the forest, your dog, your high school prom date, or how you like to bike on weekends with your partner.

So many interviewers never even look at a candidates resume before entering an interview, and they are probably really busy, hence the need to hire, and likely switching from other meetings, tasks, or commitments before entering the space with an interviewee.

Asking this question puts a lot of onus on the candidate which can be used strategically as an advantage.

Taking this into mind, an interviewee should set the tone of the interview by delivering an umbrella overview of their experience and key achievements as it very specifically relates to the role, as well as why they are excited about the position and the company. Knowing the product, service, or whatever problems need to be solved and speaking to this directly will also be advantageous.

Many candidates don't know what the company they are interviewing really does and you can stand out by doing your homework and speaking to it.

Finally, I find from years of career coaching that interviewees are rightfully very nervous going into the interview. Always start answering this question by saying thank you to to interviewer(s) for their time, by name, and that you are excited to be there.

Using their names can very quickly build report. Adding that you are looking forward to learning more about them, the position, and the company makes the energy of the space more welcoming for all, and can go a long way during everyone's time together. It will also make the candidate feel more at ease. It's a fabulous strategy that has worked for many!

Always remember as the candidate that you wouldn't be asked to interview if they didn't think you could do the job. Show them you can! Don't be vague, be specific.

I hope the interview process eventually leaves space to know who you are as a person, as I believe that Hopefully There's plenty of time to talk about what you like to do in your free time, use this opening to make a lasting impact!
